Discovering Carnac
Come and discover the town of Carnac and its most beautiful tourist sites. We have selected for you the must-see places and activities:
Carnac and its menhirs
The menhirs of Carnac are a 6,500-year-old landmark of European prehistory. The three main sites (Ménec, Kermario, Kerlescan) alone contain more than 3,000 menhirs spread over 4 km, covering an area of around 40 hectares. Make the most of your vacation with your children and discover the menhirs as a family.
Good to know: from April to September, only guided tours (for a fee) take visitors inside the site. However, the site is open to the public from October to March.
If you discover a passion for prehistory during your camping vacation, we recommend a visit to the Carnac Prehistory Museum. It traces more than 450,000 years of history through a rich collection of over 6,600 objects.
The Tumulus of Saint-Michel
On the heights of Carnac, the Tumulus de St Michel is an important megalithic monument in southern Morbihan, both for the richness of the objects discovered and for its dimensions: 125 m long, 60 m wide and 10 m high! In these burial chambers, whose origins date back to the Neolithic period, researchers have unearthed valuable archaeological treasures: jadeite axes, ornaments, beads, flint tools… At the top of the hill stands a small chapel dedicated to Saint Michel. The site also offers breathtaking views of the Gulf of Morbihan and Quiberon Bay.
Carnac beaches
Carnac boasts five beautiful beaches to suit all tastes. Carnac’s Grande plage is a big hit with families, as is Légenèse beach with its children’s beach club. The beach at Saint-Colomban is ideal for windsurfers. Beaumer beach is the place to go for shore fishing. Make the most of your stay in a rental property close to a beautiful beach, where you can relax and take part in water activities.
L’Anse du Pô, oyster-farming site
An ancient little port, Anse du Pô is a remarkable natural site whose ancient oyster-farming vocation is still firmly rooted in the landscape. As early as the 1880s, Carnac was one of the first sites dedicated to shellfish farming. Today, some thirty producers work to the rhythm of the tides in the oyster beds along the Anse du Pô and the Rivière de Crac’h.
Take advantage of your camping holiday near Carnac to join a guided tour of an oyster-farming site! A fascinating visit that will end, as is the custom in Southern Brittany, with a tasting of oysters accompanied by a small glass of muscadet.
